FORMBY restaurant The Gallery Bar and Grill has begun its own X-factor style search for the area’s most needy sporting talent as part of a new sponsorship competition.

The restaurant, based in Halsall Lane, is looking to provide kit sponsorship for a worthy local sports team, or teams, across football, rugby and cricket.

Now the restaurant has launched its Formby Sports Idols competition to find the teams it believes are most deserving of new kit.

The Gallery is inviting sports groups from Formby and the surrounding area to write in and explain in fewer than 100 words why they need and deserve the sponsorship.

The Gallery’s manager Steven Rice, said: “We’re always very keen to support local grass roots and amateur sport and have been looking to sponsor a local team for some time now. The only problem is there are so many great teams in and around Formby that it’s hard to know who needs sponsorship the most.

“Our Formby Sports Idol competition will allow teams in the area to tell us how much they need new strips and why they deserve the sponsorship.”

Teams interested in applying for the sponsorship can write to Steve Rice, The Gallery Bar and Grill, 2 Halsall Lane, Formby, L37 3PX.

He’s known for liking his Vodka Martinis shaken not stirred, but a Liverpool restaurant is hoping a new mixture will become James Bond’s favourite tipple.

The Gallery Bar and Grill, has created a new cocktail, named The Daniel Craig, in honour of the Chester-born, Wirral-raised film star, who this week gets his second outing as Britain’s most famous secret agent.

The Gallery is serving up the drink and six other Bond-themed cocktails ahead of Friday’s national release of Quantum of Solace.

The drinks have been devised by The Gallery’s manager, mixologist and Bond-fan Steve Rice, who has written to the film star inviting him to come along and sample the drink that bears his name.

Steve said: “We wanted to come up with something in homage to the way Daniel has re-shaped Bond into a darker and more complex character.

“The Daniel Craig is a gin and honey vodka liqueur-based cocktail that contains fresh blackberries, strawberries and raspberries, so just like Daniel’s portrayal of Bond, it is strong and edgy, but also smooth and sophisticated.

“Daniel has become one of the world’s most recognised stars since the last Bond film and we’re very proud of him here on Merseyside. Hopefully he can find time in his busy schedule to drop in for a taste of his namesake!”

Also on the cocktail menu at The Gallery will be Cointreau of Solace, Ursula Undressed, From Russia with Love, 007Heaven, Live and Let Rye, and The Man with the Golden Rum.

The drinks are being served at both restaurants throughout the Bond film’s cinema release.

How to make the Daniel Craig:

Ingredients

50ml gin
25ml Krupnick honey vodka liqueur
Dash of fresh lemon juice
3x fresh Blackberries
2x fresh strawberries
3x fresh raspberries
Champagne float
Served in a Martini glass
Garnish blackberry and raspberry

Add the gin and Krupnick honey vodka liquer to a cocktail shaker with the fruit and the lemon juice. Use a spoon to crush the fruit into the alcohol. Fill the cocktail shaker with ice and put on the lid. Shake the mixture until the outside of the shaker begins to turn frosty. Strain the mixture into a chilled Martini glass. Add the Champagne float and garnish to serve.

School children from St Luke’s primary school in Formby got a chance to wear their ‘art’ on a sleeve of a different kind at The Gallery Bar and Grill.

The Gallery’s manager, Steve Rice, approached the school to see if its children would come up with a design for the front cover of the restaurant’s Christmas menu.

Steve said: “We were inundated with some really great pictures that sum up this really wonderful time of the year. It was a really hard choice and in the end we decided to go for three winners.”

Emma Walsh, 9, Fraser Goodwin, 10, and Lily Horricks, 8, all from Formby will be the lucky recipients of Toys R Us vouchers, and their respective families will also be treated to a meal at the restaurant too.

Emma created a selection of Christmas images, Fraser produced a picture of Santa going head first down a chimney, while Lilly drew a Christmas tree in a festive picture frame.

For Emma it was an extra special treat as her piece of artwork will be the one that sits in pride of place on the menu at The Gallery’s restaurants in Halsall Lane, Formby, and Allerton Road, Liverpool.

Steve concluded: “We’ll be displaying each of the children’s work of art in the restaurant because it will be great for our customers to see how much hard work they put into coming up with these fantastic pictures.”
